The surname “Ryoriya” originates from the longstanding service of the Ryoriya family as cooks to the former lords of Kumamoto, the Hosokawa family, particularly in recognition of their contributions to Lord Hosokawa Tadaoki. To reaffirm the history and background, the naming of this tea room was entrusted to Hosokawa Morimitsu, a descendant of Lord Tadaoki. Given that the location of the tea room is within a place called the “House of Fine Cuisine,” the keyword for the name was “taste.” However, the name “Myomi-an” was bestowed by Mr. Morimitsu to also convey the meaning of a place with a worldview and atmosphere that extends beyond just food.
This place, where the Ryoriya family and the Hosokawa family reunite after many long years, serves as a location to pass on the essence of “tea” to new generations and to shape the history and culture for the future.
